Serving God at Work - Putting the Priesthood of All Believers Into Practice
The Protestant Reformation radically changed our view of work, which resulted in an economic boom. One of the central teachings of the Reformation was “the priesthood of all believers,” the doctrine that every believer is in the ministry, not just pastors, evangelists, and missionaries. The Catholic Church taught that the world is divided into two categories—sacred and secular, so they also made a sharp distinction between clergy and laity. Priests, monks, and nuns were considered to be more valuable to God because they were doing “spiritual” work. Everybody else’s work was “secular."
But after the Reformation overturned this unbiblical distinction, every craftsman and artisan, every mother and housewife, every business person and political leader, every farmer and janitor could affirm that their work is a high and holy calling—that it is ministry.
Tragically, the priesthood of all believers is the one Reformation doctrine that has never been fully embraced by evangelical churches. In this webinar we will look at why this has happened and why we must affirm the priesthood of all believers if we are obedient to God’s Word. We will study eight keys to understanding God’s perspective on work. Once we understand a biblical view of work, we can then apply six principles to finding direction, joy, and worship in our work.
