The Indulgence Controversy
Description
The Reformation was triggered by a controversy over an indulgence sale intended to pay for St. Peter’s Basilica. To understand the controversy, it is necessary to understand what indulgences are, how they were abused in this sale, and Luther’s response to the sale in the 95 Theses. Luther’s methodology, however, shook the Catholic Church to its core, with the result that Luther was excommunicated.
