In the synoptic Gospels, we read about a rich young ruler who approached Jesus and asked, “what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?” (Matthew 19:16). There’s great irony embedded in this passage of Scripture. The young man had the right desire. When he inquired of the Lord, he didn’t ask for anything sordid or perishable. He asked about obtaining eternal life. In reply, Yeshua gave him an unambiguous answer that amounted to putting Him first, above every other consideration; “sell your possessions and give to the poor…and come, follow Me.” In addition, Jesus gave him an unequivocal guarantee; “and you will have treasure in heaven.” Even so, the young man chose to walk away. How could that be?

The young man whom we find in Scripture is not unique at all. Many men and women know the truth and even desire the truth. And yet, they walk away. How can that be?

This webinar will examine many of the factors that prompt people to turn away from following Jesus, even when they know that the Gospel must be true – factors such as the accountability of the Gospel; the offense of the cross, and the cost of following the Lord. How can we help people deal honestly with their real reasons for disbelief? How can we minister to them so that they may walk to the Lord instead of walking away?
