Serving God and Society in Government

As Christians in the realm of diplomacy or politics, we are called to bring our faith to bear in the public square. The political battle is also a spiritual battle. We must fight against the forces of relativism, asserting the knowability of truth and reason as a basis for respect, communication and persuasion across differences. At the same time, we must not confuse politics with proselytism, nor claim that there is a certain set of “Christian” political opinions, or that there is a uniquely “Christian” party affiliation. Ultimately the great blessing of serving in a realm that deals with human power relations and human government is to learn how small we are and how great God is: “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalm 46:10).
